Best Places to Buy Fruit Trees Online

Best Places to Buy Fruit Trees Online

As someone living in the Phoenix, Arizona area, which is one of the largest U.S. cities, I’ve been fortunate enough to find many amazing local nurseries or places that offer a variety of different fruit trees.   If you aren’t quite as lucky to have many nurseries near you, then ordering fruit trees via mail is a great way to go.

There have been those tough to find varieties or other reasons that have lead me to purchasing some of my fruit trees via mail. I’ve put together a list of some places that I’ve really enjoyed doing business with or have seen others I know purchase high-quality plants that I’d recommend.

Tropical Fruit Trees

Tropical fruit trees can be more of a challenge to find in local nurseries, unless you are living in a tropical setting, which many of us aren’t.  There are several online options to purchase tropical fruit trees, but here are a few of my go to places:

Logee’s

I purchased my Silas Woods Sapodilla from Logee’s and was extremely happy with the quality of the tree.  I was unable to find this variety anywhere and the tree has been a steady grower.  The trees from Logee’s  tend to be smaller starter size trees, with a little bit higher price, but can be a great option for finding some rarer tropical plants and fruit trees.

They do have ongoing specials and deals, that help bring the cost down.  Many of the trees they offer are geared for container growing.  It’s perfect for those that have greenhouses or intend to bring plants indoors over colder winters.  They also have some informative Youtube videos on container growing various fruit tree varieties.

Sow Exotic

I stumbled upon this nursery when looking for a low-cost option for a Jamaican Cherry tree.  Since I knew this tree was a rapid grower, I figured I could get away with purchasing a small starter plant for cheap.  Purchasing from Sow Exotic didn’t disappoint.  I was very happy with the plant and their prices are great.

They have a nice selection of rare and exotic tropical fruit trees at a competitive price.   They’re more starter size trees, but do have some other larger options.  The pots they utilize are bio-degradable and environmentally friendly.  The business is owned by a couple and the care they put into the business really shows.

Flying Fox Fruits

This is a small mail order operation that specializes in a few various varieties of Tropical Fruit trees which include Annonas, Myrciarias, Eugenias, Pouterias, and Garcinias. Flying Fox Fruits is run by a single owner who propagates everything at his residence.

Since he is so busy, it can take a little while for him to respond, so be patient.  I purchased a small Red-Hybrid Jaboticaba plant and have been happy with it.  I intend to try some of the Atemoya scions this year and take a look at some of the Pouterias.  He sells seeds, scions, and small starter plants.

Fruit Lovers

Ok, so this isn’t a place to get fruit trees, but is the ultimate place to get tropical fruit seeds and scions for grafting.  I’ve purchased tropical fruit seeds from various places with minimal germination success, until I found Fruit Lovers.  They have an unbelievable selection of pretty much any tropical fruit seed that you could imagine, depending on what’s in-season.

My first attempt at germinating Canistel seeds from purchasing through another business proved to be unsuccessful, so I gave Fruit Lovers a chance. The Canistel seeds I purchased from Fruit Lovers all germinated successfully. The seeds are fresh and they also ship internationally.  If you’re into grafting, they have a nice selection of scions for various tropical fruit trees.

Top Tropicals

This is one of the most well-known online nurseries for tropical fruit trees.  Top Tropicals has an extensive selection of varieties that are hard to find anywhere else.  This is a great place to go if you are looking for larger sized trees.  Any questions I’ve had regarding caring for tropical fruit trees, they’ve been very informative and have quickly responded.  They have a wealth of information on their website and I enjoy browsing their site to learn more, while dreaming about future purchases.

PlantOGram

I have yet to purchase from PlantoGram, but like Top Tropicals they have a diverse selection of larger sized fruit trees.  Some of my friends have purchased from them and the trees look excellent.  They can be slightly higher priced, but worth it for the size of the tree.  They also carry a variety of non-tropical fruit trees and plants.  One cool feature is that they allow you to select your own tree via live cam of the nursery.

Stone Fruits and Deciduous Fruit Trees

If you looking for things like plums, peaches, jujubes, cherries, pomegranates, mulberries, apples, apricots, and similar types of fruit trees, then here are some places to check out.  One thing to keep in mind when shopping for these types of trees is that a lot of them are shipped out in late winter or early spring as bare root trees.  It’s typically best to start pre-ordering in late fall for your spring shipment.

Womack Nursery

These guys have been around for a long time and have a great reputation.  Womack Nursery has a lot of unique varieties for various growing conditions, but being based out of Texas, they mainly specialize in plants for warmer climates.  These trees tend to have really good root systems and high quality.  Prices are competitive with other nurseries.  Check out some of their nut trees.

Just Fruit’s and Exotic’s

I’ve been eyeing up their Loquats for quite some time if I could just find the yard space.  Just Fruits and Exotics has a great variety of some lesser common varieties of stone fruits, deciduous, and subtropical fruit trees for warmer climates.  I’ve also enjoyed the info they provide on caring for various fruit trees.

Grow Organic

I’ve really appreciated learning from their how-to videos on Youtube. These videos have been great for raised bed gardening tips and insight on growing berries. Although I haven’t been as committed to growing as completely organic as I should be, I appreciate those that encourage it.  I’m a huge fan of Grow Organic’s commitment to fully growing organic.  I’ve purchased a Pomegranate from this company and have been completely satisfied with their customer service.  Grow Organic also sells various garden products and seeds.

All in all, ordering fruit trees from mail order companies has been a positive experience.  If you are struggling to find certain varieties or just have limited access to fruit trees in your area definitely take a look at some of these companies.

If you have had positive experiences with mail orders from some of these companies or any additional companies that you enjoy ordering from I’d love to read your comments below.

  • Do you have any suggestions for places to order some of these tropical fruits so we can try them to help decide if we even want to grow them? For example, I am interested in guava and loquat but have never tasted one. Before I buy a tree I’d like to try different varieties.

    • If you live in the Phoenix area or a large city, checking out various ethnic markets is where I’ve been able to find a lot of the tropical fruit or more unique stuff. There are some places that sell fruit online like miamifruit.org or themangoplace.com
